What To Do In October

October is one of the greatest months of the year. The weather starts to turn more mild (hopefully), fall and Halloween decorations appear in yards and on porches, pumpkins and other winter squashes are ready to be harvested, and kids look forward to a wonderful evening of tricks and treats. Some also start thinking of the holiday season and what they can to do to help. Well, we have some ideas!

They load up the kids and go door to door asking for donated nonperishable food items instead of for candy. This gives the kids a way to give back to their community in a safe way. Just be sure to have plenty of adult supervision, don’t stay out too late or go to unknown neighborhoods, and use the buddy system. After the collecting is all done, plan on bringing the kids by the food bank to drop off and help sort and stock our shelves. They will love getting to be more involved in the process. Just let our Volunteer Services Coordinator, Jim Wagner, know so he can plan ahead. Fill out the Online Food Drive & Fundraiser Registration Form so we know when to expect you, and let us know about how many kids may be stopping by.

farmers-market-814921_1920Did you know that we accept fresh produce as well as nonperishable food? In fact, we love giving our clients healthy and nutritious fruits and veggies. Even better if they come from local farms! There are so many great items in season right now: pumpkin, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, swiss chard, broccoli, okra, onion, etc. and we can take it all! Visit the local farmer’s markets and support them, and maybe donate a little percentage to your local food bank too.

Long OrthodonticsNow is also a great time to host a food drive! Just be sure to fill out the online form so we know when and what to expect. Need to know what our most needed items are? Visit here.  If you live in the Buda area, you can also drop off food at Long Orthodontics until November 18th. They host an annual food drive to support the food bank!

Our Turkeys Tackling Hunger Campaign Fund Drive is also going on until November 30th. You can sponsor, donate, or register a team until then! Have a little fun with giving back and start a friendly competition at your office. All funds raised will be used to purchase supplies for holiday meal boxes and to support the ongoing operating expenses of the Hays County Food Bank.

Thank you for your support. We couldn’t help so many without you.
