City of San Marcos Donates $350 and 316 Pounds of Food

City of San Marcos

On November 9, the City of San Marcos donated $350 and 316 pounds of food!

Their support will help us provide turkey boxes to area families so they can enjoy the comfort and tradition of a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner. Last year, more than 6,500 people enjoyed a turkey dinner with all the trimmings as part of our Turkeys Tackling Hunger program, and the need has increased! This year we will provide 30% more turkey boxes to Hays County residents.

More than just a meal, this food brings hope and the promise of better days to come for families struggling to make ends meet in today’s economy.  In a recent letter from a Communities in Schools liaison from the Hays Consolidated Independent School District, a Program Manager shared stories from her experience with this program.  She relates, “I have had the privilege of delivering turkey boxes within Hays County for the past four years.  The stories and thanks I’ve heard are truly unforgettable. Upon delivering a box to a family of 8, the youngest child digs through the box and excitedly yells, ‘Aw cool, Mom, look, pumpkin pie!’  Another sibling hollers out, ‘Mmm, pumpkin pie. I love Thanksgiving.  Look, Mom, now we’ll actually have a turkey to make for Thanksgiving.’ Mom was eternally grateful. While delivering another box to a family of 5, the youngest runs out to my car and helps me with the box of goodies. He is eager to help with what will make this the ‘Best Thanksgiving ever!” And so we thank the City of San Marcos employees for sharing the joy of the season with many families this year!
